In recent years football has exploded onto the betting scene and everybody is betting on the game. 10 years ago football was still considered a niche when it came to betting, but it has now smashed into the mainstream. Second only to horse racing football is a multi million pound betting industry. The main contributor to the rapid growth of football betting is the number of fixtures that are televised and the concept of in-play betting. The year 2000 saw the birth of betting exchanges which made in-play betting possible (the ability to place bets whilst a match is running). In-play betting was a revolution for many sports but not for the largest stake holder horse racing. As an average horse race lasts for around a minute it doesn't give the punter a great deal of time to place bets. There are horse race punters who do bet in running but the majority still bet pre-race. Football is very different. With 90 minutes plus injury time available to make selections and the slow paced nature of the game in-play football markets provide countless opportunities to punters.
With this form of betting came a massive growth in the number of different markets available. Many of these markets can be considered a bit of a novelty and are used as bit of fun for people who are watching a particular game. There are however many more advanced markets that are now widely used by many of the professionals in the game. The list of available football markets is now endless. Below are the common markets available on most betting sites:
• Match Odds - Who will win the match?
• Half Time - Who will be winning by half time?
• HT / FT - The correct half time and full time result
• Under / Over 2.5 Goals - Will the match produce under or over 2.5 goals?
• Next Goal - Which team will score the next goal?
• Total Goals - How many goals will be scored in the match?
• Number of Corners - Exactly what it says on the tin
• Correct Score - Predict the final score
• To Score - Which individual players will score?
• Red Card - Will there be a red card in the match?
Along with the newly found diversity that betting in-running has brought to the game the amount of money staked per match has dramatically increased. Even the smaller match markets are now turning over hundreds of thousands and the industry as a whole has grown at an alarming rate. The boom of in-play betting has changed the arena of football betting and it is still evolving today!
