Many people think that they can feed horses just like any other domestic livestock. This is not true; mostly because of differences in their digestive anatomy and physiology. In horses, there digestive anatomy is classified as a monogastric animal with simple stomach and an extensive post-gastric fermentation of undigested feed residue. This complex combination with the addition of post-gastric fermentation is the reason horses can make use of both forages and concentrate. On the other hand, it is also the reason it may be a bit difficult to properly manage feeding in horses.
Generally, an average horse is expected to consume about 10 to 12 gallons of water every day, 1.0 percent of body weight in forage and less than 1.0 percent of body weight in concentrate coupled with the free choice of salt.
